A new Nepalese restaurant – Base Camp, opened in Jyväskylä about a month ago & it already has top ratings in eat.fi! We tested it out last week. As a fresh change for vegetarian food lovers, Base Camp offers two veg choices in their lunch menu every week day. The other Nepalese restaurant – Nagarkot & Indian restaurant – Shalimar in Jyväskylä offer only one veg option in the lunch menu.
The lunch menu is published online & I believe it will not change for a very long time! So, I checked it out & selected what I wanted to try first. My choice of food fell on a Wednesday! And, we went. The ambience was good. We sat in a cosy corner near the window on a rainy day.
In its current location, a Thai restaurant operated but was closed down (by the way, we visited that Thai restaurant & were not at the least pleased with food or the service!).
Of the two veg options that day, I ordered Malai Kofta. The sauce was very tasty. The koftas were a little too tightly packed for my liking. I felt the koftas weren’t very moist either. But the sauce made up for these shortcomings! As with all Nepalese restaurants, the main dish (malai kofta, here) is accompanied by dal (lentil stew), raita, white rice & nan bread. Oh, there was also a salad bar but nothing very exciting! Here is my lunch.
TH ordered the other veg option – Masaledar Ramtoriyo aka potato-okra curry. Do you notice couples where wants to concentrate on enjoying the meal while the other focuses on taking pictures first? Yep, that was us last week. I took this one from my side of the table.
The potato-okra curry was such a pleasant experience! We are usually a little skeptical about trying okra at restaurants here because most restaurants use frozen okra. In my personal cooking experiments with frozen okra, I was never happy. And, I am biased towards fresh okra! But, Base Camp did a good job!
Also, dal at Nepalese restaurants is usually watery but not at Base Camp. As you can see, they serve huge portions especially rice! Lunch includes salad & coffee or tea. We tried their ginger tea & were happy with it.

As mentioned in my review for Nagarkot, lunch menu is a good idea to sample some dishes at a cheaper price. Lunch consists of curry (or curries) of choice along with all the above mentioned accompanying dishes, salad bar, nan bread & coffee/tea for €8.80-€11.50.
