Crochet: Easy Cozy Purple Hat

After the Jan stripes hat, I made another hat in a single color. The pattern is similar but because of thicker yarn, the stitch numbers change and single color gives a totally different look. I used an alpaca-wool blend yarn & it is so warm 🙂 I have worn it nearly everyday during the cold snap!

Yarn: 2 x Drops Lima (50g/100m) in dark purple

Hook: 5 mm

Stitches used: American terminology –

ch – chain

sl st – slip stitch

sc – single crochet

hdc – half double crochet

3 dctog – 3 double crochet together

Ribbing for band:

  1. ch 6 + 2
  2. hdc in 3rd ch from hook & in each ch. ch 2, turn.
  3. hdc in each st. ch2, turn

Repeat row 3 till the band is big enough to go around your head. Put it around your head & stretch it to check fit. My head (hat) size is 53 cm. The hat will stretch with use, so I made the band only 44.5 cm long. In total, I got 42 rows. I have worn this hat for about 6 weeks now & it fits perfectly!

Hat:

Sew the short ends of the band together.

Row 1: Place 60 sc stitches evenly around the top of ribbing.

Row 2: ch 3, *3 dctog in nxt, dc in nxt*  Repeat from *-* till end. sl st to 1st 3dctog.

Row 3: ch 3, *3 dctog in nxt (on top of dc from previous row) & dc in nxt (on top of 3dctog from previous row)* Repeat from *-* till end. Make last 3dctog on the sl st from previous row. Then, sl st to top of beginning 3dctog.

Rows 4-11: Repeat rows 2 & 3

(Please note, this will result in a slant joining look on the side of your finished hat. Cover it with a flower. Or to avoid the slant, do not sl st at end of rows. After row 2, directly start row 3 but place a marker for reference.)

Rows 12-13: ch 2 & hdc around.

Rows 14-15: ch 1 & sc around.

Turn the hat inside out.

Thread a yarn needle with a piece of yarn that can go around the hat. Pull the yarn through the alternate stitches of last row. When you reach starting point, pull tightly with both ends of yarn. Make sure there are no holes or empty spaces. Secure it with a couple of knots. Cut & weave in ends.

Wear it as it is or make a pompom. For a more feminine look, make a flower & attach it to the side. What do you prefer?

By the way, a year ago yesterday I finished a lap blanket and gave it to TH for our anniversary. No such plans this year but you can read an updated post about the lap blanket here 🙂
